This
excellent picture book is the catalogue for a shinsakuto tanto
(newly-made dagger) exhibition that was held in Okayama in 2005.
The blades are presented by smith, and accompanied by their respective
koshirae (fittings). The koshirae have also been specially made for
each tanto.
The title refers to the tanto that was offered to the newly-born boy in traditional Japan.
Among the included craftsmen are Amada, Kawachi, Gassan, the Yoshiharas, and a lot more, better or less known. Kiyota
Jirokunietsu is also there. Each smith is presented with his address, a brief bio, and a personal commentary.
This book constitutes an excellent reference document on present-day
swordsmiths. This type of book remains scarce. This one, indeed, is not
in print anymore.
