Why
the need... ? All
swords entering or leaving Japan must succeed through a series of
procedures always puzzling and time consuming.
Some of these include:
- Registration of the weapon with the government upon
arrival
and reserve procedure upon
departure - Authentification (only traditionally made swords may enter Japan; Protected artworks cannot leave; etc) - Control by the customs - Interactions with various Ministries and the police
- Picture taking; Oshigata tracing; forms
filling; fees; etc
Registration with responsible organism(s) for Shinsa (Appraisal - such
as NBTHK or NTHK), or submitted to craftsmen for required work,
depending on the intended purpose.
...all this in Japanese only!
